2 Tips You Must Know Before Buying A Laser Printer

I have been wanting to get a laser printer for my business for months. This purchase has been put on hold for days and months.

Finally, we decide that this purchase has to be made this period. We bought our Mono laser printer, Fuji Xerox P3124 from Sitex 2009.

Let me share with you, the pre-purchase and the 2 tips I got from one of the sales promoters at the show.

Before the show, I google for ‘tips for buying a laser printer’ and found this ebay page to be rather useful and simple for me (a non-geek) to understand.

Our main purpose of getting a laser printer is to be more cost-effective as we do print up an average of 100 pages (black & white) of documents weekly. We have been doing that using inkjet printers. Not only is the cost of cartridge high, the printing speed is rather slow too.

I do not like the idea of using 3rd party ink (though much cheaper) as previous experience with one hasn’t been pleasant. It seemed to have jammed up the flow of ink and it was a hassle setting up.

So having the main objective of getting a valued Mono laser printer is what we set out to Sitex with. Going to such fairs, one must have a very clear aim else you would be overwhelmed by the number of products and services available.

We asked for Samsung, Epson, Brother, Canon and Fuji Xerox Mono laser printers.

  1. One of the most important aspect for us is the cost and capacity of the toner. It is this consumable that accounts for the bulk of the printing cost. Please do note that for some laser printers, the drum (separate from the toner) needs to be changed too but it is usually after the usage of 5 toners so if you are a high volume user, cost of the drum should be factored into your consideration.
  2. Find out the type of the toner which comes together with your printer. Never assume a full toner is given. For some laser printers,50% – 75% toner is given. Some call it the developer or starter toner kit. This is usually not communicated to buyer.

Other than these 2 factors you should consider, you would definitely want to look into the warranty period, speed of printing, quality of printout and unique features.

Are there any tips or must know that you would like to share for buying a laser printer? I would love to hear from you. Leave me a comment.

2009-2010

It’s Aug 2009 already.

This year is passing by fast just like many others. I do feel that time passes very fast after my graduation in 2004.

Recent “ketchup” session with my Uni mate reminded me of the length since we have graduated from NUS (National University of Singapore). 5 years! Wow!

It’s unbelievable. I do not know why. Perhaps time passes so fast that I did not pause and feel the heartbeat of life.

2005-2007: Start of my work life; I work in a small start up company in the education industry.

2007 – 2008: I was self-employed, with a major change in my life: taking charge and really learning things by doing them.

2009: I was still self-employed in a partnership.

I kind of lead a unique  “career”. I hardly send out any resume except for one to Carrefour applying to be a Management Trainee. That was before I left for US for my summer camp stint. They never call.

Recently, there was a constant reminder that we are going to move up the next phase of my business. It seems a little daunting, slightly stressful but I guess that signifies progress.

With the economy to be so-called on the downward cycle (which I hardly feel it when I go shopping malls), I must admit our business has done close to what we initially target in Dec 2008.

Yesh!

The cool thing is I’m excited and looking forward to 2010, imagine the amount of work, developments, new working relationships, new projects, collaborations…

Are you looking forward to 2010?

Hmmm…. I should start to think about listing down the major milestones for 2009 in Dec 2009.

7 Tips On Renting A Commercial Unit In Singapore

I was searching on google on ‘Tips on renting commercial property in Singapore’. The results were abundant BUT it was more for renting apartments and houses which I believe are 2 totally different entities.

After some thoughts, I decide to come up with a list of tips on renting commercial property. These are tips I learn while looking for a suitable location for my business (Still searching, if you have to offer let me know, much appreciated)

The first three points are often what property agents will ask in order to cater to your requirements. So you must do some work before hand.

  1. Size & Shape of space; it is dependent on the activity you are carrying out. Have in mind the range of sizes you are looking for. Shape is important too. I need a regular shape (i.e. square or rectangle shape unit). Fitted or Bare?
  2. Location & Surrounding. Do you need a space which must be highly accessible by public transport? Or location is secondary in your selection. Many a times, location comes with a price!
  3. Budget. The two factors above will determine the range of price for your unit. Certainly, negotiations can be done if you really find a suitable place and you would want to negotiate to a price which is favourable for both parties.
  4. Find an experienced agent. Experienced agents save you the time and you are handled with ‘professionalism’.
  5. Know the ’standard’ practice of the costs involved. 2 Months deposit + 1 Month advance + 1 Month commission for agent (for a 2 years lease).
  6. Other Charges involved? Is GST included? Is there maintenance fees involved? What are the other charges that tenants have to bear? Are there any restrictions or limitations on the usage of the unit? What would be the approximate utility cost per month?
  7. Negotiations for better deals? Length of tenancy, ‘free’ renovation period, ‘requests to be made to landlord’

These are just some tips I came up with after viewing a couple of commercial units. I would love to hear from your experience in renting a commercial unit in Singapore.

Argh! I can’t stand copycats! (Plus How I Deal With Them)

I am in the education industry. In fact, I’m a business owner as well as a trainer.

As we are just a start up, we have to do everything on our own to manage our cost effectively. Luckily me and my co-partner each have our own strengths which make matter easier.

However, I have been a little frustrated recently with a COPYCAT! A company which writes almost the same way as us. Well, some might see it as a form of flattery since we are the one being copied. It shows the quality of our work but still! Who can stand the fact that someone just almost wholesale copy your style, content etc … I know some things are not copyright in fact I think the line is rather grey. Nevertheless I will not expose the identity of the company instead I will do my part more and wish them all the best.

I was googling on ‘how to deal with copycats’ not too useful it seems. So I decide to come up with my own ways on dealing with business copycats!

  1. Do not waste energy on copycats!
  2. Have faith in your own work and trust that it will achieve the objective intended.
  3. Be even more creative than before.
  4. Have unique selling point which is not easily copied!

Do you have experience of your work being copied? Or do you copy other work? How do you deal with it? I would love to hear your experiences.
